What to know

Tolls and vignettes

Most motorways are tolled; several are electronic-only. Buy a Via Verde visitor tag or register a card at the border (EasyToll) or pay at a post office within five days. Class 2 for vans over 1.1 m at the front axle.

Clean air zones

Lisbon's zona de emissões reduzidas restricts pre-2000 vehicles in the centre.

Sleeping in the van

Since 2021 sleeping in a motorhome outside a campsite or signed area is illegal, with fines around €60–120; in practice the Algarve enforces, the interior rarely does. Áreas de serviço are cheap and plentiful.
