What to know

Tolls and vignettes

Free for vans under 3.5 t. The LKW-Maut applies from 3.5 t gross (motorhomes exempt, panel vans are not: carry your V5 to argue it).

Clean air zones

Green Umweltplakette (about €6, order online or at a TÜV office) for over 50 Umweltzonen including Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne. Euro 4 diesel or better gets green.

Sleeping in the van

You may sleep in the vehicle for one night to 'restore driving fitness' anywhere parking is legal; camping behaviour is not allowed. Stellplätze: thousands, €0–15.

Kit you must carry

Warning triangle, first-aid kit and hi-vis vest are all mandatory. Winter tyres are required in winter conditions.

Speed limits, van under 3.5 t

no general limit on the Autobahn (130 advised); 100 / 50; vans over 3.5 t 80
