Ask for the registration and read the MOT history: chassis and underbody corrosion advisories matter most on a 4x4.
Get underneath with a torch: chassis rails, outriggers, crossmembers, body mounts. Welding plates are a story, not a repair.
Test low range and the lockers on the drive, and listen to the transfer box.
Check the tyre date codes: old all-terrains crack before they wear.
